A fter a fidgety tw o-and-a-half year wait, a brand new T-Bird has finally em erged from the concept stage (as first displayed at the 1999 D etroit Auto Show) to the produc tion line. This latest version -- due out this spring * -- isn't some w arm ed-over or rebadged donor car, but an honestto-goodness tw o-seat roadster, com plete w ith optional port-holeequipped rem ovable hardtop. It must be the 1950s all over again, right? Well, not exactly. True, the latest T-Bird may evoke retro images o f ducktail hair cuts, drive-in movies and bobby socks. But, besides its nam e, the 2002 m odel offers only a few m odest acknow ledgem ents to the past, including rear-w heel-drive V8 pow er and a num ber o f appropriate styling cues to satisfy the term inally nostalgic. In fact, it's unlikely m any buyers o f the 2002 Thunderbird were even alive when the original debuted 45 years ago. But that doesn't m ean the True Believers o f all ages w on't be cele brating the c a r's return. F or these folks, the last real Thunderbird that Ford produced was back in 1957, the final year for the first-generation two-seater. In their m yopic world, everything after that -- a variety o f overw eight and overw rought pretenders w ith flabby flanks and questionable lin eage -- were simply unfit to wear the Thunderbird logo. The 2002 version may signal the restoration o f the two-place roadster, but it would be m isguided to believe it's Ford's version o f the Corvette. Like the original, the T-Bird's is destined to operate in cruise mode. It has been designed to reflect a state ment o f personal luxury in the grandtouring sense. W ith the new Thunderbird, it's not so m uch when you arrive, but how you look and feel when you get there. The `getting there' part, however, shouldn't be easy to enjoy. Perched under the T hunderbird's hood is a 3.9-litre DOHC V8 borrow ed from the Lincoln LS sedan, which also supplies the c a r's rear-drive plat form. In a salute to the original, the new T hunderbird's exhaust system has been tuned to approxim ate those rum bling bass notes made by the first-generation car. H ow ever, in term s o f perfor mance, the m odem B ird's 252 (SAE net) horsepow er will pretty m uch walk all over the original. In true personal luxury fashion, the only available transm ission is a five-speed automatic. Helping the Thunderbird's road m anners is its 50/50 weight distribu tion, which lim its the c a r's tendency to either understeer (overpow ering the front wheels in a turn) or for the rear-end to slide into the turn (over steer). Balance like this is hard to find on m ost front-engined cars, and almost im possible on those equipped with front-w heel drive. W ith the pow er top lowered or the optional 38-kg steel roof removed, the steeply-raked w indshield has been designed to shield the T hunderbird's occupants from buf feting. The rear trunk is not overly gen erous, but will hold the obligatory two sets o f golf clubs. Additional storage for small items exists behind the front seats. As you would expect from any prem ium roadster, the Thunderbird arrives well decked out, including dual-zone c lim a te . control, pow er windows, locks and six-w ay pow er driver's seat, pow er tilt and telescop ing steering w heel, leather interior, 17-inch alloy w heels and a premium audio system with CD player. Will the back-to-its-roots T-Bird score with the buying public? That would appear to be a giant affirm a tive if the Neim an M arcus experi ence is any indicator. T his upscale departm ent store o ffered 200 special edition Thunderbirds for sale last Christm as at US $42,000 a copy. All were sold in a little over two hours. Not only has the real Thunderbird returned, but, apparently, so has the magic. %
