Wednesday May 2, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER COM M ENT Televised execution just thinly-veiled voyeurism Public executions may indeed, as someone said, be the ultimate spectator sport to our let-it-all-hang-out, tell-all neighbours south o f the border. Television is now cheerily full o f real crime, real births, and real fights. So, why not real human deaths? I'll tell you why. Televising the upcom ing state-sanctioned execution o f Timothy McVeigh isn't what a civil society encour ages. It only panders to the worst instincts in all o f us. * But the U.S. Attorney General dis agrees. Last month, he approved the live broadcast via closed-circuit television o f the execution on May 16 to 250 survivors and victims' families o f the Oklahoma City bombing tragedy, the worst domestic terrorist attack in U.S. history. He says this will bring closure to the families o f victims and the survivors. But will it? How do you ever have complete clo sure when dealt such a devastating blow? What does this slippery, feel-good term, closure, mean anyway? And will watching it on television make it better? Not in the least. In fact, all it does is open the door to our baser instincts, a door that is already widening with every inch of reality television. Is this admirable? Not at all. Profitable? You betcha. It's Lord o f the Flies on CNN. Already, one company wants to broad cast McVeigh's final moments live on the Internet. Entertainment Network Inc. has . sued the U.S. government claiming bar ring them from doing this is a violation o f the first amendment that guarantees free dom o f the press. The president o f ENI has been quoted pay for it, it' s our tax dollars. " Indeed. We must all cherish our almighty right to watch someone die. If ever there is a more callous, selfserving comment about our society, I've yet to hear it. It isn't just his audacity in abusing the first amendment in such a grotesque way; it's the way he pushes his own corporate agenda to justify crass voyeurism. We pay taxes; the state is killing some one; we ought to be able to watch it. The question is: why? Why must we always see everything that happens? If I, God forbid, was in the shoes o f one o f the survivors or next o f kin ' & DIANE HART as saying he expects much demand for his product: the death o f a human being. Here's his astonishing comment from a weekend newspaper: "It' s about the first amendment. It' s our first amendment right to view this. We all o f the victims, I'm not hypocritical: I'd probably like to know he was put away for the rest o f his life. Or even say I wish he were dead. But would I need to see it hap pen on television? Not at all. Just tell me he's been put away for the rest o f his life and promise me you've thrown away the key. But don't tell me to watch a grotesque circus evolve in the U.S. and tell me, ludicrously, that I will get closure just by tuning in CNN. Some say there is nothing to be done about it all. The human condition, after all, has always been about watching tragedy unfold: who can deny the desire to glance at a car accident, a murder site, a train wreck? We may not like the fact we do it; but we do it all the same. It is, as some U.S. professor has said, all part of the unfolding o f human drama. But he takes it a step further, claiming that watching a public execution is a civic exercise and, so, should be put on the net work that televises other government pro ceedings. Has the world truly gone mad? I honestly don't know what is more grotesque: watching someone be killed on television or listening to people who ought to know better try to justify it has some thing more than a ratings grab. N o better time to turn off the set.
