www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, September 25, 2015 | 8 Challenge about protecting Oakville's reputation: Brennan continued from p.1 The tweet, which attracted the most attention and for which Burton apologized, was made Aug. 28 in response to a Canadian Press article about former members of the Canadian Forces being hired as security guards at Stephen Harper's campaign events in addition to the RCMP officers. "Any political parties had private police using veterans before?" Burton tweeted, along with links to Wikipedia pages on Hitler's Brownshirts and Mussolini's Blackshirts. "Any others?" The tweet prompted a massive media and public response with people from across the country calling on Burton to resign. On Monday, Brennan called on council to allow the integrity commissioner to investigate whether Town policies were violated by these tweets. Burton abstained from the portions of the meeting dealing with the integrity matter. "There is no other motivation to stand here before you and ask for an inquiry except to enhance democracy and justice for actions that have been extremely damaging to Oakville and her identity," said Brennan. "My intent in this affidavit is to seek the enforcement of the rules, laws and guidelines that are set up by the Province of Ontario and this council. Oakville and her citizens must always come first and foremost, especially when its identity is threatened by the mayor's actions." Brennan said the request for an inquiry is not about him, noting his actions are supported by thousands of people who want restitution and who want it made clear no one is above the law. "Tonight, as councillors, don't be fearful to vote based on your conscience," he said. "I received telephone calls telling me I was brave to ask for this inquiry and to come before all of you. I am not brave. It is easy to do what is right for Oakville." In making his argument, Brennan pointed to a page on the Town's website dedicated to Social Media Guidelines, which states, "Official Town social media sites must not be used to promote individual political opinions or campaigns." Ward 5 Town and Regional Councillor Jeff Knoll questioned whether Burton's Twitter account @OakvilleMayor is an official Town social media site or a personal account. "I don't like what he tweeted at all," said Knoll. "But I also don't buy the fact that councillors, mayors and other politicians, are somehow restricted in their rights to speak openly and freely about things they feel strongly about. There are councillors and mayors running in this federal election. There is a councillor sitting at this table, who is running in this federal election." As an integrity inquiry could only result in a reprimand or suspension of salary for a period of up to 90 days, Ward 5 Councillor Marc Grant questioned whether an inquiry would be worth its $10,000 to $11,000 price tag. Brennan said he was willing to crowdfund to get the money. Grant argued that even if that money was raised privately, there are a lot of things in the community on which it could be better spent. For some, the matter remains an emotional one with one audience member yelling out that Burton should apologize to Prime Minister Stephen Harper for his remarks. Brennan asked what the point of having an integrity commissioner on the payroll is if the town is not going to use the role. see Lone on p.11 Buying? Selling? Re-financing?
