1 1 1Thursday, October 1, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER Adnan Shahbaz, Green - Oakville North--Burlington continued from p.6 University with a bachelors o f arts -- history and Bachelor o f education. The candidate said he believes Canada should be a leader in global peace and secu rity... and "a beacon o f hope that people from all around the world can look to in regards to a nation where you feel safe and secure and a nation that leads the world in innovation and research and development and manufacturing and economic prosperity," he continued. His admiration for Green Party Leader Eliz abeth May also served as motivation for him to run in the upcoming election. Shahbaz, who is completing a master of education, social and cultural context o f edu cation at Brock University, but has taken this semester off to run in the election, said May was the first to oppose Bill C-51 and has never been afraid to "do the right thing for the right reasons." He said that's the true role o f an M P and he's hoping to bring a voice that will " truly repre sent the constituency." Shahbaz, who has lived in Burlington over the last five years, but had lived in Oakville for 10 years prior to that, noted the Green Party plans to pump a lot o f funds into research and development as well as green technologies, and he envisions the Oakville-North Burling ton area being a hub o f sustainability and in novation. If elected to represent the riding, he plans to fight for issues that are important to the com munity first and foremost, including conserv ing the green space in the area and improving infrastructure like transit. Using the example o f CN's plans to build an intermodal terminal in south Milton, he said that even though the Green Party supports rail infrastructure, he knows the area constituents aren't keen on having it built so close to the community. "Having an intermodal rail facility so close to an urban, developed area, essentially in our backyard, we're going to have hundreds, if not thousands, o f diesel trucks every week to load and offload containers and that intermodal place will run 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-aweek. 1would be opposed to that and I would stand up in the House o f Commons, even if my party doesn't want me to," he said, add ing he would ask that the facility be built else where, away from houses and families. "There needs to be better planning in place between all levels of government and I believe this has happened because there hasn't been any communication," he continued. "When you have the Council of Canadian Governments coming together where we have provincial, municipal, First Nations, Metis, Inuit, and federal representatives all sitting at the same table, we can solve these problems even before they become situations like the one that is happening in Milton." Shahbaz is encouraging residents to vote and to consider doing so for him and his party "The Green Party is a viable, strong option," he said. "Because we are a brand new riding, we have no incumbent so we have the ability in Oakville-North Burlington to do something new, to do something drastic, essentially, but re ally represent our community . It's so important to go out and vote and have your voice heard," he continued, "Do not let the fear o f strategic voting keep you at home."
