Janice Best, NDP -- Oakville North--Burlington continued from p.6 Federation of Labour. For 14 years, she was a Canadian vice president with the Office and Professional Employees International Union. "I solve problems, I get things done, I know how to get things done," said Best, who has volunteered with Telecare Burlington in the past, taking calls from people in crisis. Best, who studied labour studies at McMaster University, said she's running in the election because it's time for a change in Ottawa. "I'm certainly unhappy with the way our veterans have been treated," she said. "I think we need to look at restoring their pensions to the state that they used to be, I think we need to reopen the service centres Julian Fantino closed and I think we need to let our veterans know that the country that sent them to war cares about them and wants to take care of them when they return in a damaged state as so many of them do." Best believes the NDP has the best program to kickstart the economy. "We want to implement one million new, safe, $15-per-day childcare spaces so that women and men who can't afford to go to work because childcare costs are so prohibitive, can go out and make a decent living," said Best. The NDP candidate is also growing her own independent jewelry business and is a member of several networking organizations, including Business Network International, Company of Women and Women Who Excel. "In doing that, by the way, we're putting more people back into the workforce, which will improve the economy." The government also needs to take better care of Canadian seniors, she added. Best said the NDP would ensure retirement age remains 65, not 67 as the Stephen Harper government intends, and added, "We would enhance the Canada Pension Plan so people can retire with dignity." If elected, Best said she would also fight to reinstate a federal minimum wage and increase it to $15 an hour. Canadian families deserve a fair wage and a decent living, she said.
