Apps remind users to take break continued from p.21 For the good of our health, and to prolong our lives. Who wudda thunk? Actually, lots of science sorts have thunk. Indeed, assorted studies have indicated that taking simple steps like taking the stairs instead of the elevator up to your 49th-floor office, or placing (and using) exercise equipment in front of your TV , or intermittently standing and stretching throughout the workday are a boon to good health, and a bane to things that can kill us like high cholesterol, weight gain, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. So, it's come to this. Now, there are apps that intermittently black out a computer screen to remind the user to take a break, and to make them unable to continue working for a minute or two. Just enough time to fidget. I often think of our ancestors, whose relentless physical laboring -- whose sweat and toil -- built this country up, but eventually broke them down. I think of them looking down on us, shaking their heads, and wondering when societal progression started to resemble regression. At what point did we let technology take over? When did we become a society of hapless sofa spuds? Unsettling questions that make me uneasy, and, ah, make me fidget. -- Andy Juniper can be contacted at ajjuniper@gmail.com, found on Facebook www. facebook.com, or followed on Twitter at www. twitter.com/thesportjesters. Sponsored by: Swim or Walk for Mental Health Sunday Frank Zaumner's fundraiser for mental health has come a long way since its beginnings seven years ago. The Swim or Walk for Mental Health has become a local annual tradition at the grounds of Appleby College, 540 Lakeshore Rd. W., raising tens of thousands of dollars every year for mental health programs that help Oakville residents. Organizers for this year's fundraiser, on Sunday (Oct. 4), are hoping to raise $35,000 to support the Recovery through Education for Adolescents and Children in Halton (REACH) program. The swim, held at Appleby College's indoor pool, runs from 7:30-11 a.m., while a leisurely walk will take place from 9-11:30 a.m. around the campus grounds. Families, children and pets are invited to participate in the walk. Zamuner founded the swim as a means to fundraise for local mental health programs after he overcame the challenge of experiencing and living with depression in the wake of heart surgery.
