25 | Thursday, October 1, 2015 | OAKVILLE Jayden's dreams come true at the wheel of a go-kart continued from p .10 "We don't have any outlandish dreams of him competing in Indy or Formula 1," John said. "Our only goal is to allow our child to continue to participate in the only thing where he's treated with respect." Since that first day on the track, Austin has not only become Jayden's friend, he's also Jayden's hero and mentor (http://www.bttoronto.caMdeos/4090534946001/). Jayden said he has a sense of belonging when he' s on the track "There is nothing I'd rather be doing," he said. In his first year, all the karts were owned and prepared by track officials. He finished 27th out of 147 children in the entry level Youth Arrive & Drive competition. In his second year, he demonstrated his na tional talents by finishing second in his series and fifth overall in Ontario. "In his second year he showed his natural talent, making some bril liant over-taking moves and show ing intense focus," John said. "I don't think he blinks when his helmet goes on." Jayden is just finishing his third season. Future races are schedJayden Elphage uled for Oct. 11 with semifinals on Oct. 18 and the finals on Oct. 25. He now competes in two different karting series, the Canadian Rookie Karting Champi- onship (CRKC) where karts are provided and in the Toronto Racing Association of Karters (TRAK) where racers must provide everything, including their own karts, trailers, tools and spare tires. It costs nearly $700 per season to race in CRKC. Costs to compete in TRAK are more. Race fees cost $80 for each of the 13 races. There are other entry fees to compete at other tracks such as Mosport. The Elphages bought Jayden a used 2013 gokart that had been in several crashes for $2,200, but by the time it was rebuilt, they had had spent $4,200. Add the costs of fuel and other expenses and it takes about $8,000 to $10,000 a season to run competitively John said. "As racers, we don't like to talk about dol lars. . . he said. "When you need a part like a clutch or a chain, you go to the shop at the track and get it. Usually you run an account and don't ask the price because you need it to run." The Oct. 4 run starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Your Health Wellness Centre at 200-1158 on Win ston Churchill Blvd., Oakville. All proceeds will go to support Jayden. More information is available at the clinic at 905-829-0724 or at wwwyouihealthwellnesscentre.com or facebook. The Elphages can't begin to thank everybody who has helped make their son's dream come true, especially Your Health Wellness Centre. "We intend to thank them all personally on that day," John said. "They have all taken us on as family Their hearts have touched ours in a way we will never, never forget." The Elphages said their son doesn't complete ly understand all the fundraising, but when they asked him why so many people want to help him, he said, `Tm special and they want me to win, too."
