St. Jude's COTA concert series kicks off St. Jude's Celebration of the Arts (COTA) concert series kicks off its 25th season tomorrow (Friday) with the Larkin Singers. Under the direction of Matthew Larkin, the Toronto-based professional choir was founded in 2008 and performs three concerts annually. The COTA concert starts at 8 p.m. at the 160 William St. church. "Well-known for highly-acclaimed performances of ambitious sacred classical repertoire, (the Larkin Singers) are coming to. St Jude's to perform music with a monarchical theme, celebrating Queen Elizabeth, whose reign has become the longest ever surpassing that of Queen Victoria on Sept. 9," stated a media release. Music will include works of the English composers George Frideric Handel, Edward Elgar, Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The group's artistic director is also the director of music at Christ Church Anglican Cathedral in Ottawa, where he leads one of the last remaining traditional choirs of men and boys in Canada. Under his direction, Larkin has taken both the Cathedral Choir and the Larkin Singers on tour in Canada, the U.S. and U.K. "Sadly, this will be the last ever concert for the Larkin Singers, who announced their closure last month, for financial and logistical reasons," according to the release. "COTA is privileged to host this very special farewell concert for them, and it is a last chance for an audience to hear their choral expertise and superlative quality of sound." This year, Simon Walker has taking over the reigns as COTA artistic director and has been director of music at St. Jude's since 2012. For its 25th season, COTA will look back to its beginnings when the series was founded by John Laing and focus on choral and vocal music from different styles and periods. Future concerts in 2016 include: · Schola Magdalene (Jan. 30); · the Talisker Players, with selections of songs and music by Irving Berlin (April 8); · St. Jude's choir (May 14).
