I H t U rtivV lLL t U tA V tK Wednesday May 23, 2UUI Ford helps fund St. Vincent's garden project Students, staff, and parent volunteers at St. Vincent's School have planted the first phase of their Schoolyard Naturalization Project. Almost one year in the making, the school was assisted by Ford M otor Company o f Canada who generously offered an initial $1,000 payment, with addi tional funds provided to match any monies raised by the school up to a maximum of $2,000. Since St. Vincent's was able to allocate $2,000 from school fundraising efforts, that translated into $5,000 worth o f plants, flowers, shrubs and soil, supplied by Burlington's Holland Park Nurseries. Ford also donated a commemorative tree. "This is a great way to bring the children and the local community together," says Grade 1/2 teacher, Cecilia Racine, who tended the project from its early inception to its presently budding state. `T h is naturalization pro ject empowers the children to feel that they can improve the environment and their surroundings." The recent one-day flurry o f horticultural activity marked just the beginning of a three to five-year plan. "We really look forward to the evolution of the pro ject as an outdoor classroom and the active involvement of the students in their com m itm ent to ecological responsibility," explained school principal, Suzanne Rossini. "This is a learning com munity, and the garden con nects the students to their science curriculum, as well as to other important aspects o f their education," she noted. The project extends beyond the school bound aries, as local residents have been invited to share in the task of overseeing the gar den's fragile development.
