But for a car company that has traditionally maintained an accountant's eye on keeping prices low, the new Santa Fe leaves the bargain basement behind to compete with the more mainstream builders of SUVs. As it turns out, the Santa Fe's arrival couldn't have been more perfectly timed. Not only is the demand for sport utility vehicles still redhot, but most of the action these days is at the lower end of the market. This is where you'll find starting-point off-roaders such as the new Ford Escape and M azda Tribute, a totally redesigned Toyota RAV4 and perennial favorite Honda CR-V. These, plus other offerings from Suzuki, Nissan and Chevrolet represent an abun dance of choice for first-time buyers who want to get in on the sport ute craze without spending an arm and a leg for the privilege. Along with lower initial pur chase prices, these SUVs bor row many of their mechanical pieces -- including engines, platforms and suspension com ponents -- from existing sedans. This not only keeps the w eight down, but provides greater fuel efficiency com pared to the larger truck-based A machines. And with most being purchased for all-weather, rather than off-road purposes, traditional 4x4 necessities such as a two-speed transfer case are not viewed as essential. The Santa Fe takes direct aim at this ,market with a vengeance. The Californiastyled exterior is more wagon like than most of its competi tors, but with an aggressive front-end that suggests both power and ruggedness. There's a beefy front bumper with matching side cladding grafted to the attractive body, along with a tall greenhouse that adds to the vehicle's dis tinctive look. Hyundai has also dialed in more than 20 centimetres of ground clearance for those times when hurtling over large snow banks or crossing muddy terrain is required. Below the surface, the Santa Fe uses the Sonata sedan's basic structure, but stiffens every thing up several notches to han dle any of the tougher on- or off-road assignments that might Hyundai Santa Fe Four-door sport-utility wagon available in GL and GLS trim. 2.7-litre DOHC V6 makes a respectable 185 horsepower. Four-speed automatic transmission. The Santa Fe is an attractive newcomer with contemporary styling. Standard V6 engine means there's plenty of power to handle most conditions. Both trim levels deliver a significant degree of comfort and features. Base price: $25,000 (GL), $29,000 (GLS) come its way. All Santa Fe models des tined for Canadian drivers come equipped with a 185-horsepow er 2.7-litre DOHC V6 that is connected to a four-speed `Shiftronic' automatic transmis sion that allows for clutchless manual-style shifting. The four-wheel-drive system uses a viscous coupling unit that directs up to 40 per cent of the power to the rear wheels when ever slippage is detected. The base Santa Fe GL comes reasonably well equipped and includes cruise control, power windows, doors and locks, CDequipped stereo, roof rack, rear wiper/washer, 16-inch alloy wheels and four-wheel disc brakes. Moving up to the GLS gets you air conditioning, ABS, leather interior with heated front seats, keyless entry, rear window privacy glass and fog lights. The GLS option repre sents a $4,000 premium above the base model's $25,000 stick er price. The injection of the Santa Fe into Hyundai's vehicle lineup vaults this Korean auto maker into the big leagues in terms of variety as well as product devel opment. With the mind-boggling range o f SUV choices out there, arriving late to this party won't be easy. But the smart-looking, pow erful and w ell-equipped Santa Fe should be able to over come this hurdle and enjoy wide public acceptance in short order. Hyundai Sante Fe earns top SUV crash rating The Hyundai Santa Fe sport utility vehicle earned the highest rating in the 40-mph frontal offset crash tests conducted recently by the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Santa Fe was given the rating of "Good" and heads the list of 10 current small SUVs test ed by IIHS. The IIHS crashworthiness evaluations are based primarily on results of the frontal offset crash test. Each vehicle's overall evaluation is based on three aspects of performance: measure ments of occupant compartment intrusion, injury risk measures from a Hybrid in dummy posi tioned in the driver's seat and analysis of slowmotion film to assess how well the restraint sys tem controlled dummy movement during the test O © © © © © F I V E S TA R C E R T I F I E D © © © © © FIVE STAR CERTIFIED f l o s s a o e> O o i3 © a ui in c c CC FIVE STAR CERTIFIED X i : & & & & ® GLENLEVEN Q Jy>nm * fe * FIVE STAR CERTIFIED o $ $ $ $ $ < " ' i Q ?(iyhed~ Q ^o w m " 30 m U) > O m o < /> in > 2 HYUNDAI OF OAKVILLE : rp f \ M T ? m / 20M I in y Q fE A R S O a k v il l e 33 / 7 n President s Award W inner , , * , Award based on highest level o f customer satisfaction for sales and service.
