LIMITED SEATING Andrew Bailey, a Grade 10 student at St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School, is one of two w inners o f the 2000-2001 Spirit of Inclusion Award. Andrew, who has a learning disability, was honoured by the Halton Catholic District School Board Tuesday evening as this year's secondary school recipient. (The elementary school winner was Burlington's Georgy Dhanjal.) The awards were handed out by the Special Education A dvisory Com m ittee (SEAC). Oakville mayor and SEAC Selection Committee member Ann Mulvale said both winners are as worthy o f recognition as any other student. "All are children of God, no more, no less," said Mulvale, who told Andrew that it is all right to fail as long as you learn. "W e're really in your corner celebrating with you tonight." A ccording to SEAC m em bers, A ndrew experienced difficulties in academ ics through out elem entary school. Since entering Grade 9, however, he has m atured and achieved success in high school, both academ ically and socially. Andrew, they said, "has progressed from a troubled individual with academic concerns to an outgoing, respectful and successful teenag er." "He has rebuilt his life," said M ulvale. Andrew has been the constant com panion and support helper for a D ow n's Syndrome stu dent at the school and is always "ready and willing to help staff and students with w hatev er is needed" and does so w ithout being asked.
