A4 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday May 30, 2001 Region is particular when it comes to home trash By H ow ard M ozel OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF While some items put out at curbside for bulk collection in Oakville took longer to be disposed o f than some res idents liked, some should never have been left there in the first place. According to John Smith, Halton Region's Senior Waste Management Co-Ordinator, calls are also coming in from homeowners who have just put their junk out - well after the deadline to do so. Smith explained that bulk collection took place for the past two weeks only and that those who missed out will have to wait until next May to ditch it - or take it to the regional landfill site for $5 per 150 kgs. That said, collection crews were to have finished up on Saturday but kept working on holiday Monday and at press time they were still picking up larger metal items. (Anyone with ques tions can call 825-6030.) Residents are encouraged to consult their regional waste collection calendar for dates and for items which are not to be left out for pickup. They include building and demolition debris, con crete and bricks, tree branches and stumps, soil and rocks and auto parts. "Someone left half a car for us this year," said Smith, who explained that household hazardous waste is also taboo. "We get a ton of propane tanks which can be taken to the landfill site for free." Smith said it is also typical that some residents put out wljole swing sets - some dismantled, others not - for collection. He said crews do what they can if they have enough room on their trucks. Others leave nails protruding dan gerously from wood and Smith said some crew members were sent home with injuries. He went on to say that scavengers can be a little too enthusiastic as well: one resident who was cutting his grass had his lawnmower taken when he went inside for a moment. In another incident, a just-delivered fridge was pinched. One child who lives on Forestwood Drive had his backpack containing his school project taken around 7:30 p.m. Friday after he left the item a little too close to curbside. (Anyone with infor mation can call Howard Mozel at the Oakville Beaver at 845-3824 ext. 249.) Halton Region will be hosting an Environmental Day on Sat. June 4 at its 1151 Bronte Rd. headquarters. On that date residents can drop off items such as household hazardous waste and tires as well as buy blue boxes and backyard composters.
