The 87-year-old Oakville resident designed more than 650 books over his career and has collected more than 170 awards locally and abroad for both design and illustration. Now, Newfeld has another accolade to add to his collection that includes the Canadian Centennial Medal and the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal. He's become a member of the Order of Canada, which recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation. Newfeld, who illustrated children's classic Alligator Pie and created the original logo of the Royal Ontario Museum, accepted his insignia at a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa Sept. 23. He was among 35 new Order appointments and nine new officers announced by Governor General David Johnson. Newfeld, who has lived in Oakville for 29 years, said he was happily surprised to receive the recognition, which is the cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System. "It was a once-in-a-lifetime thrill and an occasion that made you feel proud and lucky to be Canadian," he said about having the insignia pinned to his lapel by Johnson and being among a group of talented individuals from various fields. Newfeld has had a long career as a book and catalogue designer, but he was also an educator for a number of years, passing along his wisdom to students at Ryerson University and OCAD in Toronto and Sheridan College in Oakville. He started teaching at Sheridan Frank Newfeld part-time in the late 1970s, instructing illustration and typography before becoming head of the illustration department. He retired in 1993. Brenda Clark, one of his former students, was also among the recent group of people who joined the Order of Canada. She was recognized for illustrating the iconic Franklin the Turtle books and helping mentor students, notably at Sheridan College, where she funds scholarships. "It was a pleasure to see one of my illustration students from my early years teaching at Sheridan College was receiving the Order of Canada at the same ceremony as me," said Newfeld. "... She got her medal before me and we both laughed afterwards and said that didn't seem right." The Order of Canada was established in 1967 by Queen Elizabeth and has more than 6,000 members from all parts of Canadian society.
