Also from Burlington, Angela Cass, 24, is a full-time coach and performer with Zacada. As a child, she was a rhythmic gymnast and dancer and then she discovered circus. Circus a perfect combination "Circus was the perfect combination of acro and gymnastics. I felt like I really fit here," she said. Cass coaches all apparatus but mainly performs on the hoop. In the show, she will be part of a trio aerial hoop act. "This show is spooky but fun and quite different from our other shows," she said. "I love Halloween, so I am excited to be doing a Halloween show." The show's 30 performers also include Quinten Melo, one of Zacada's original students who went on to study for three years in Montreal at the National Circus School. He is now coaching and performing at Zacada. Hamiltonian Jorden Moir, a world-class juggler and world champion hacky sacker will also be in the show, along with Eilea Given and Kaitlyn Simpson, current World Jump Rope champions. Zacada co-founder Christine Cadeau, who is a former Cirque du Soleil coach and performer, will also perform. She is directing the show with David Fancy, a professor of dramatic arts at Brock University, as well as her husband, Kosta Zakharenko, who was a silver medallist at the World Championships of Acrobatic Gymnastics and is a former Cirque du Soleil performer. When the 14-year-old Oakville resident had done dance and gymnastics, her favourite aspects were climbing and acro, so it seemed circus was perfect for her. After Grade 6, Natalie attended camp at Zacada Circus School in Stoney Creek. There, she learned the basics of each apparatus and trained for a group show at the end. She tried out for the school's show team and now trains four times a week for three hours each time. This month, she will be in her second Zacada production, Circus Labyrinth. The Halloween-themed show tells the story of a spooky world dominated by a giant minotaur who has young people trapped in his maze. They need to outwit the monster in order to survive. The show will feature trapeze, the cyr wheel, juggling, clown work and skipping. Computer generated imagery, data projections and an energizing music score round out the show. "A show is a real group effort," Natalie said. "Each person is just as important in creating the show. I really like that." Natalie has worked on hand balancing (handstands), the hoops and hammock. But she now focuses on the trapeze. "I grew to love trapeze because you can do so many tricks on it," she says. Two other local performers join Natalie in the show.
