Hope in High Heels walks a mile in their shoes by Tim Whitnell Metroland West Media 5 | Friday, October 2, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com These men took a walk on the stylish side. About 80 men and teenagers in Burlington, and another 60 in Oakville, donned highheeled shoes last weekend in solidarity with women who have experienced abuse. The sixth annual Hope in High Heels event was held in Burlington at Emma's Back Porch on Sept. 26. Its 80 participants was higher than last year's turnout. The fifth annual Oakville walk was staged at Centennial Square on Sept. 27; the 60 or so men who took part was a little less than in 2014. The beneficiary of the fundraiser is Halton Women's Place (HWP). Organizers expect to raise approximately $110,000 between the two events this year, about $20,000 more than last year. All funds stay with HWP , which operates shelters in Burlington and Milton for abused women and their children. "This event means so much to Halton Women's Place as we believe it is through education and advocacy that woman abuse will be prevented and, ultimately, ended," said Carm Bozzo, development manager for HWP . "We know that it is crucial to have men stand up against woman abuse. We need their support in letting other men that they see mistreating their partners, sisters, mothers, etc., know that it is not OK and that they must stop. "To see the young boys, the teen boys and men of all ages gather together and show their support in our organization and this human rights issue is incredible...." said Bozzo. Hope in High Heels helps HWP in its annual fundraising, which has an overall target of $700,000 this year. "Last year alone, we assisted 1,185 women and children through our residential and transitional support programs, and our crisis counsellors answered 1,125 crisis calls," Bozzo noted. Milton will stage its first Hope in High Heels event on Sept. 17, 2016; the Burlington and Oakville events return to their same locations in late September 2016.
