Police holding firearms and weapons amnesty Oct. 19-29 by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 15 | Thursday, October 8, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Halton residents, who have any firearms they no longer want, now have the opportunity to get rid of them. Halton police will hold its second regional Firearms and Weapons Amnesty Oct. 19-29. It's an opportunity for members of the community to hand in firearms and/or weapons and ammunition that are unused, inherited or illegal, without the fear of being charged. Police said they are holding the amnesty to create a safer community and to prevent dangerous weapons from falling into criminal hands. Currently in Ontario there are more than 500,000 citizens who hold valid possession licenses (POL) and possession and acquisition licenses (PAL). There are more than 300,000 restricted and prohibited firearms registered in Ontario, not including non-restricted firearms (long guns). Police said in some circumstances, POL and PAL licensees no longer wish to keep their firearms due to age, ability and residential location. In other cases, the licensee forgets to renew their licence or dies, leaving the firearms unregistered or in the possession of unlicensed family members. The amnesty is an opportunity to have the police come and safely take these weapons away. In addition to illegal or unwanted guns or ammunition, residents are encouraged to use the amnesty to get rid of imitation firearms or air guns as well as any other weapons that may pose a threat to public safety, including switchblades, butterfly knives, pepper spray, nunchuks, shurikens, push daggers, knifecombs, crossbows, spiked wristbands, batons and/or blowguns. To arrange a weapons pickup, residents can call 905-465-8733 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the amnesty. Residents must not bring any weapons or firearms to a police station, transport firearms or weapons in a vehicle or greet officers at the door with firearms or weapons. Officers assigned to pick up the weapons will provide police identification and will require a signature for destruction. Last year's amnesty saw 180 firearms turned in, along with approximately 40 knives and 200 pounds of ammunition.
