A group of senior broadcast journalism students hosted the debate in advance of the Oct. 19 federal election. Candidates from the Oakville, Mississauga Centre and Brampton ridings were invited -- areas in which Sheridan has campuses -- but many declined or were unable to attend, including Oakville incumbent Conservative candidate Terence Young and Liberal candidate John Oliver -- both of whom had prior engagements. Shortly after the event ended, Oliver's campaign staff sent an email to the Oakville Beaver explaining because Oliver is in the late stages of his campaign and his schedule is heavily booked, he had prior commitments on all three proposed dates for the discussion, according to Angela Amal tano, communications chair for Oliver's campaign. To ensure there was Liberal party representation in the Oakville segment of the debate, John arranged for Alghabra, candidate for Mississauga Centre, to attend, said Amal tano. However, with Alghabra participating in his riding's debate, his organizers turned down the offer, and Amal tano said, Oliver's camp was informed late Thursday afternoon, leaving no opportunity to make alternate arrangements.
