Oakville NDP candidate underlined importance of student vote continued from p.30 was also there), he told the Beaver by phone Friday afternoon. "We told them originally that my schedule didn't allow it. I had a commitment to go to the Chair's Dinner. The American ambassador and his wife were there. As a member of Parliament, I had to be there," said Young. As a candidate, Young said you can't go to every event that you're invited to in a run for office, "even if you want to." Through his campaign, the Conservative incumbent has offered to meet with Sheridan journalism students at a future date to discuss the important issues. "I would be happy to come and meet with the class and talk to them about the issues of the day," said Young. "I love going to Sheridan College. I visited the journalism class (before) to talk about the work I do in drug safety when Jody Sanderson was the teacher." Attendance issues did not curtail the allcandidates debate from moving forward. In fact, it offered an opening for criticism those candidates attending did not turn down. In one of her responses, Marville said it was a bit difficult to react to other parties' plans when two of the candidates were missing, adding she felt it was more of a conversation than a debate. "The reality is that the two people missing (Oliver, Young) speak volumes about what they value, who they value and whether or not they think this is a place that will make significant change in the election," said Marville, noting 9.3 million Canadians didn't vote in the 2011 federal election, 58 per cent of whom were under the age of 30. "The belief is young people don't matter because they don't show up. The way you change what's been happening in education is by showing up to vote." Doel, Sheridan and Loyalist colleges graduate who has spent time as a video editor for CTV News, echoed Marville's comments and noted this was only his second debate and the fact two more experienced candidates didn't attend was "eye-opening." Debate discussion also turned to postsecondary tuition rates and what each party would do to make it more affordable, if elected. Marville, head of her own consulting firm and a strategic adviser for a national seniors' wellness program for Origin Retirement Community, said her party would do several things, including removing interest rates, increasing minimum wage to $15/hour and creating 40,000 apprentice jobs. "Many people are not going to university or college because they can't afford it and if they do go, they're working two or three jobs to try to help themselves to survive. They're still graduating with up to $28,000 in debt," said Marville. Doel, a self-employed video producer, manager and writer, said he would first look to other countries to see what works there, as Germany and Norway offer free education. He said he would immediately eliminate student loan debt exceeding $10,000 and cut tuition fees for students and their families who can't afford it, as well as offering them additional support through guaranteed livable income. "To go further than that, we actually want to phase out tuition fees altogether by 2020, by working with the provinces and institutions. We feel 2020 is a goal that is achievable," said Doel. 31 | Thursday, October 8, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Develop Good Habits Early!
