Trade, labour and social issues at forefront for Unifor by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, October 15, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Candidates vying for the job of Oakville riding MP in the Oct. 19 election were put in the hot seat last Thursday at an all-candidates debate hosted by Unifor Local 707. In the last scheduled debate in the Oakville riding, more than 100 people gathered at the Galaxy Club at 475 North Service Rd. E. to hear the two-hour exchange between candidates on labour and social issues. Oakville Green Party candidate David Doel declined the host organization's invitation because of a previous commitment. Although the debate was fairly tame, discussions on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), Bill C-51 and Bill C-24 and the niqab sparked shouts and cries from the audience. Often times, candidates were observed muttering comments while another spoke. With regards to the TPP agreement, which will have significant implications for the auto industry, candidates were asked whether they and their parties would commit to maintain and renegotiate an increase in the existing automotive content thresholds and ensure future automotive trade is mutual and goes both ways. "The Liberal Party absolutely supports free trade as this is how we open markets to Canadian goods and services. It's how we grow Oakville riding candidates, pictured from left, incumbent Conservative Terence Young, NDP candidate Che Marville and Liberal candidate John Oliver, discussing the issues at the all-candidates debate hosted by Unifor Local 707 last Thursday. | photo by Nikki Wesley Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog or facebook.com/HaltonPhotog) businesses and create good-paying jobs," said Liberal candidate John Oliver. He said the Liberals would take a "responsible approach" to the TPP , hold extensive consultation, open public debate in Parliament and commit to ensuring Canadians are fully consulted on the trade deal. Denouncing claims the TPP was negotiated in secret, Oakville Conservative incumbent Terence Young said the deal was negotiated over three years with stakeholder input. Among the rules Young says will protect Canadians is a "snap-back mechanism" that will allow Canada to re-impose a tax if the other countries violate the deals of the trade agreement. "We have a special safeguard, a safety net to stop a surge in exports. If some country wants to dump a bunch of cars cheaply on our market, we have a special safeguard to (ensure) it won't happen in Canada," said Young. "We also have `favourite nations status' that means other countries can't use regulations to favour autos from any other country." NDP candidate Che Marville said the TPP needs to be more transparent. "The reality is we don't know what is in the deal and wild cards are Japan, Korea and how many parts are supposed to be from Canada or not," she said. "This is a crisis for us because look at Oakville. Look at who lives here. Look at the profound effect Ford has on this community." She noted the NDP supports trade but, alongside it, supports transparency and openness, and building and developing innovation in Canada. She criticized the Stephen Harper government for negotiating during a campaign period. see Unifor on p.13 FREE INSTALLATION ON SAFETY COVERS* 15' round $2999 12' x 24' rect $5499 18' round $5999 14' x 28' rect $6999 $ 99 21' round $7999 16' x32' rect 89 $ 99 24' round $8999 18' x 36' rect 109 $ 99 27' round $11999 20' x 40' rect 119 MaNy More SIZeS & SHaPeS avaIlaBle*!!! 12' x 24' inground kidney Shaped pool INJURED?
