www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, October 16, 2015 | 12 New headquarters will take police into the future -- until at least 2042 continued from p.1 equate from a number of different perspectives. We have more of cers to train now. The (shooting) range downstairs only allows four or ve of cers to train at the same time. The new facility will allow eight to 10 to train at once." Ready for fall 2017 The new police headquarters at 2485 North Service Rd. W. is to be completed in 21 months, with police operations to begin in fall of 2017. Nearly $65 million has been budgeted for the project's structural costs, information technology, computer and radio systems, and furniture. The facility is being built on nine acres of Region-owned lands just south of the Halton Regional Centre. It will feature heightened security measures, storage areas for specialized tactical vehicles and weaponry, and a modernized forensic lab. Re ecting on the police headquarters move from the previous 20 Division beside Oakville Town Hall on Trafalgar Road in 1991, Tanner said it felt, then, like they were moving into a state-of-the-art building. "We all watch CSI on TV and we think it happens everyday. It cannot always happen in that building, but it will happen in this one," he said about the new headquarters being built. "It cannot come soon enough. Thank you to the support of all of Regional council, all of police services board and the citizens behind each of you that help you make the good and positive decisions you make on a daily basis." Halton Regional Police Service Board Chair and Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said he's happy to see discussions the board has had over the last decade about expanding or building a new police headquarters come to fruition. "One of the things I'm proud- We also need a new police facility in Milton and after that, in Halton Hills. This is a board with a far-sighted plan that looks out at the full horizon of the growth plan and is going to be there with the facilities that the community needs on time. The old days of growing without keeping up are over. Rob Burton est of as chair has been to be among the team that was nally about to put this thing in action because it was way overdue and really needed by the citizens of this great region," he said. "This is going to make us way more ef cient, it's going to allow us to better respond to the publics needs and this is just the start. chair of Halton Police Services Board Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, It's easy to love your neighbour. Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr said the groundbreaking is not only a celebration of what's to come in the shape of a state-ofthe-art-facility, but also a celebration of the men and women who will work out of the headquarters to continue a level of service second-to-none. "We're the safest region and municipality, which is terri c," he boasted. "On top of that, we, when there is a crime committed, are the best at capturing and getting the convictions, and thirdly, we are also the most ef cient. There aren't too many police services out there that are even good in one category and we are the leaders in all three categories." Carr noted with that kind of reputation comes "heavy responsibility." "We are going to give you the tools to get the job done and the good news in all this is as one of the expanding regions that opens up opportunities for all of you as we see with the new deputies moving up, this is going to be a regional police service that is going to continue to be the best, offer tremendous opportunity for people, not only to move up in the ranks, but also for new people to come in and the standards are set high," he added.
