Wednesdsay June 6 , 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C7 Homes & Gardens Take the time to check cottage water With the cottage season here, many Ontarians will be heading out for another season of rest and relaxation. Along with the normal chores associated with this time of the year, a check of your drinking water supply should be considered. "In post Walkerton, Ontario, we have learned that we can no longer blindly trust our water sup plies to be pure and safe. While the tragedy in Walkerton occurred with a municipal water system, ' the purity of water in individual wells or lakes should not be taken for granted," said Anne Mitchell, executive director, Canadian Institute for Environmental Law & Policy. "Last summer, in some jurisdictions such as Hastings and Prince Edward County, 47% of the water samples tested by the Ministry of Health were unsafe for human consumption. Forty-five per cent of these results contained E.coli," said Mitchell. If you have a concern about your drinking Water and are on a well, you may contact the Ministry of Health to locate the local Health Unit nearest you, where you can access details about free testing. The Ministry of Health may be contacted toll-free at 1800-268-1153 or through their website at www.gov.on.ca/M O H /english/coritact/phu/phu mn.html.
