Wednesday, June 6, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D3 Cobras bounce back from 1-0 deficit (Continued from page D 1) What a blast Donovan Bailey must be enjoying his last blast on the world track and field circuit. He made it three wins in a row with a Monday win in Rehlingen, Germany, easily leaving behind Morne Nagel o f South Africa in a time of 10.42 seconds. Bailey intends to end his racing career on Canadian soil, in Edmonton, either at the Canadian track and field championships from June 22-24 or, if he qualifies in the 100m, at the world championships in August. The tournament format turned Saturday's prelimi nary round into nothing more than a `feeler' for the teams as its only purpose was to determine semifinal seedings. For the Cobras, it was a `half-empty, half-full' sce nario. They didn't score a goal in the three preliminary round games; but neither did they allow a goal as they fought to three 0-0 draws. Basically, the Cobras did more than enough to grab the third seed and a semifinal match-up against secondseeded Conquerants de Laval from Quebec, thus avoid ing an early encounter with the top seeded Vancouver team. On Sunday, it was do or die, and the Cobras marked the occasion with their first goal of the tournament which stood up in their 1-0 semifinal win over the Quebec team. The Cobras dominated play, and got the all-important goal from a super Stephanie Muldoon strike off a great Courtney Linton through-ball. The Cobras' defence, marshaled by sweeper Katie Capron, was solid, helping keeper Ann Lavallee to earn the shutout. The semifinal victory set up the final against B.C. Champions, North Shore Running Rebels of Vancouver. The Rebels defeated Ontario Indoor Cup Champions and designated host team Scarborough Scorpions 3-0 in their semifinal game. In deteriorating field conditions, which seemed to fuel the Cobras' collective resolve, the Cobras came out in the final and played a strong first half but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Within three minutes of the restart, the Cobras found themselves behind. In a determined, total team effort, the Cobras pro duced their best soccer of the season, thus far, and in an incredible two minute period turned the tables to lead the game. The Cobras' equalizer came after a strong run by Laura Bandy and a great cross which was met by a div ing header from Vanessa Dumlao. On their next attack, the Cobras won a free-kick on the edge of the penalty box. The kick was perfectly positioned for a beautiful curling left foot strike from Karen Zmirak into the top far comer of the net. The Cobras continued to press and the Rebels were unable to counter as the Cobras defence closed down everything the Rebels had to offer. The Cobras were very deserving of their 2-1 victo ry, commented coach Keith Halbert. "I have never seen the girls so focused, or so happy at the end. They are over the moon. "It is really something to say you are the best in Canada. The Cobras team has won three provincial championships (two Ontario Cups and last month's Nike provincial cup), so a national honour is very spe cial. "It was a total team effort -- everyone contributed, with all 16 team members participating in both the semifinal and the final." The boys national Nike Cup championship was won by the neighbouring Mississauga Falcons 3-2 over Abby Storm of Langley, B.C. For the boys, there is a world championship in Berlin, July 8-16 which Mississauga will proceed on to. Ironically, while soccer is arguably the number one sport just about everywhere except for North America, it's actually quite the opposite for girls soccer. This has caused Nike to nix the girls world champi onships, although Nike Canada decided to keep it going in Canada. And no one appreciates that more than the Cobras who enjoyed their weekend in Toronto, all expenses paid. The Oakville Cobras are sponsored by Wiberg Corporation, Dencon Contracting, ACP Computer Technologies, Lick's, Lineman's Testing Laboratories, Bi-Way, Shoppers Drug Mart, Hardsoft Systems, Becton Dickinson, Rathbum Physiotherapy, CIG Plastic Technologies, Amcor Twinpak and Dr. Alison Paseneau. The age-class tourney for unranked players, living in Oakville or playing at Oakville Clubs, will run again this year at the Bronte Tennis Club, June 15-17, with some matches at Wallace Park. Deadline for entry is this Sunday, June 1 0 ,8 p.m. A $10 entry fee must accompany all entries. Sandwiched between The French Open, in Paris, and Wimbledon, in jolly old England, this classy Oakville event has been a fixture in southern Ontario since the 1950s when the Oakville Club was the local driving force in tennis. The junior championships have launched literally thousands of recreational tennis players on a life-time of competitive fun. Other notable participants were Dave Brown, a Davis Cup team member for Canada, and Bob Armitage, a talented, international satellite tournament player and currently the club teaching profes sional at Wallace Park. The Bronte Tennis Club has taken the tourney under its wing for the past four years, and according to the club's tournament pro, Natalie Namez, the growth has been constant "from 50-something entrants in 1998 to 100 last year. "We have generous sponsors and enthusiastic volunteers, a good facility with eight courts together. Our one disappointment is the relatively low number of girls involved. This is such a great game for girls and women, for everyone really. The elements are all there -- fitness, skill, discipline, character, the fun of competition and friendships -- tennis is a near perfect medium." On hand during this year's tourney will be radio/TV commenta tor (CBC, TSN), Sue Prestedge, in her capacity as chief executive of a new women's sports television channel, WTSN, due to launch in September. Hopefully, she'll be able to mingle among an improved turnout of Oakville girls. The tournament is for boys and girls U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16 and U-18. Trophies are awarded to winners and finalists in each division. The official balls are supplied by Penn. There is a players' barbecue on the Saturday from noon until 2 p.m., courtesy o f Catered Fare, Sobey's. Loblaws and the good people at Good Humor/Breyers. There are lots of draw prizes as well as neat stuff for age-class champions from Corbett's and The Merchant of Tennis and Dr. Brian Huggins (Chiropractic). Trophies are donated by Susan Diane Brown, C.A. Entry forms are available at the Bronte Tennis Club (2310 Bridge Road) and Wallace Park Tennis Club (245 Reynolds Street). This Saturday (June 9), more than 230 men, women and children from across the USA and Canada will get a chance to meet his son, 8th degree black belt Master Choi Jung Hwa. Master Choi has been invit ed to Oakville by Mike Momingstar, head instructor of Momingstar Taekwon-Do here in Oakville.
