www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, October 22, 2015 | 20 Halton roads are the least congested in the GTA by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff Halton Regional roads are the least congested of any regional municipality in the Greater Toronto Area. They're also safe and efficient, according to a report outlining the progress the Region has made when it comes to transportation. Regional council has committed to investing $2.9 billion in the region's infrastructure over the next 10 years and more than $1 billion for transportation. The 2014 Transportation Service Progress Report, received by Regional council last week (Oct. 14), provides an overview of where that money is being spent. It outlines how funds are expended when it comes to activities related to planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the regional transportation system. "Halton Region is committed to delivering high-quality infrastructure, including a comprehensive transportation system," said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr, in a press release. "On average, we allocate $120 million annually towards ongoing or new transportation construction projects and this report shows how this continuous investment is paying off in our community," stated Halton's Regional chair. The Region aims to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the regional road network through proactive programs, such as the Comprehensive Road Safety Action Plan (CROSAP), Drive SAFE (Safety Awareness For Everyone) and intersection and speed reviews. The Transportation Demand Management programs aimed at reducing reliance on single occupant vehicles have also been expanded, with Smart Commute Halton regularly exceeding target participation, according to the progress report. In 2014, the program included 25 businesses representing more than 19,000 employees -- a 4,000 person increase from 2013.
