www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, October 22, 2015 | 28 education Thousands of young women have walked the halls of Oakville's St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School (SMLS) over its long history of educating girls. Oakville's premier girls' school for students in Preschool to Grade 12, SMLS is celebrating its 125th year in St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School celebrates 125 years as Oakville's premier girls' school 2015-16, and is being honoured with an exhibit at The Oakville Museum running through June of 2016. On display is the rich history of SMLS and its focus on creating a unique and welcoming environment for girls to truly become the best possible version of themselves. SMLS believes that in the right environment, girls learning together through their various life-stages, develop to become women with their own unique voice and who are inspired and empowered to take on the challenges of a diverse world. Over its long history, the school has created a community that fosters both classroom and experiential learning. It focuses on what each student can accomplish. This has been SMLS's guiding principle since 1891. The school's internationally acclaimed Robotics Program is an example of how SMLS's students challenge barriers for women in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields. SMLS's FIRST Robotics Team was the only all-female team to win a Chairman's Award at the recent international competition. SMLS's Global Studies program is an important educational priority and has been an integral part of the SMLS experience offering local and international experiences with our partner schools in England, Scotland, China, Sweden, Japan, France and Chile. Each one of SMLS's graduating students were accepted to the post-secondary institution of their choice. More than 65 per cent of these went to a STEM field of study. The school aspires to build its community to empower future generations of girls to become women of courage. The school is inviting interested girls and their families to be a `Millie' for a day at one of its upcoming Open Houses. The dates for these are: · Saturday, October 24, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Preschool to Grade 12, meet faculty and students; · Tuesday, October 27, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Preschool to Grade 12, meet faculty and students and to see classes in action; and · Friday, November 27, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Grade 9 Showcase Current Grade 8 students are invited to try out our high school program for the day.
