John Oliver ousts incumbent Conservative Young by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 3 | Thursday, October 22, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Former Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) president and CEO John Oliver will serve as the Oakville riding's new Member of Parliament (MP). The Liberal candidate beat his nearest rival, Conservative candidate Terence Young, who was also the incumbent, during Monday's federal election with an outcome of 31,967 votes to 27,487 -- Oliver received 49.4 per cent of the popular vote. Oakville riding NDP candidate Che Marville garnered 3,830 votes while the Green Party's David Doel received 1,420 votes. These unofficial results are based on the 252 polls reporting. At around 11:30 p.m. Monday, a smiling Oliver arrived with his wife Joanna and son William at the Operating Engineers Banquet Hall and Conference Centre after it became clear the lead he had clawed away from Young would not be overtaken. More than 100 supporters applauded as Oliver greeted and embraced family and friends and the news media outlets were predicting a Liberal majority government. "Our team worked incredibly hard," said Oliver. "We've been at it since January. We've been meeting with people in Oakville, talking about the need for change and there has clearly been a response to that. Oliver attributed his victory to the strength of the Liberal platform, the leadership of Justin Trudeau and the commitment of his campaign staff and volunteers. Earlier in the evening, Oliver's campaign communications chair Angela Amalfitano reflected on the marathon campaign. "I think we've run a very strong, positive campaign. We've reached all across Oakville and the party has done a great job reaching all across the country.... We're just anxious to see the results just like everyone else," she said. "Today was really focused about getting out the vote, so we were running around neighbourhoods all over Oakville reminding people about voting, especially with the (Toronto Blue) Jays game on tonight (Monday). We're feeling hopeful and positive, but we will see.... I don't think there is anything we didn't do, so there's no regrets at this point." Oliver and his supporters endured a nail biting evening with reports shortly after 9:30 p.m. showing the Liberal candidate off to an early lead with 82 votes for Oliver, 74 for Young and 10 for Marville. As those first polls rolled in, Young took the lead at times, however, at 10:15 p.m. with 14 polls reporting in, Oliver had managed to take a small lead with 1,215 votes to Young's 1,140, Marville's 153 votes and Doel's 63 votes This lead grew as the evening progressed with around 1,000 votes separating Young and Oliver by 11 p.m. Oliver's supporters watched the election results on a giant screen at the back of the banquet hall and cheered whenever Oliver's numbers came in. Shortly after 11 p.m., Oliver's campaign declared him the winner after scrutinizers finished counting the results of the advanced polls. Young met with Oliver a few moments later, congratulated the new MP and those present on their victory and posed for photos before departing. Marville said she was not entirely disappointed with the night's outcome. "Tonight, we can celebrate that we have gotten rid of a destructive party, the Conservatives," she said and offered her congratulations to Oliver. "The Liberals ran an extraordinary campaign, but so did the NDP ," she said. "I am heartbroken for Tom Mulcair because I believe the country would have benefited from him." see Oliver on p.4 We're looking for our next Superstar!
