Kathy Graham made her comments during the recent groundbreaking ceremony for the project, where residency is based on the Life Lease con cept iij which buyers own their new homes while the Rotary Club of Oakville owns the land. A monthly occupancy fee pays for all external main tenance and the services provided in an adjacent clubhouse. This allows seniors to receive a return on their initial investment similar to the equity that they would get from a private home or condo. At the same time. Rotary land ownership ensures that the quality of the grounds, the community's rules and age 65-plus criteria of the project are maintained. Each time the units are sold, the Rotary's 5% cut of the sale price goes into a reserve to build more seniors housing. "This is another innovative solution typical of the Rotarians," said Oakville MP Bonnie Brown, one of several dignitaries and homebuyers who added symbolic bricks to a wall to signify con struction. Woodside Mews will consist of 30 garden homes located on the old fire hall site on Rebecca Street and Woodside Drive, adjacent to Rotary Gardens, which was built back in 1957. Those liv ing in Rotary Gardens will also be able to take advantage of the clubhouse and its amenities, such as a fireplace lounge, catering kitchen and support care office for such agencies as VON. Regional chair Joyce Savoline said Friday's ceremony was "particularly poignant" since it rep resents a community agency "picking up the slack" left by government to tackle the housing issue with fresh eyes. "We can't put fences around how we think," she said. Mayor Ann Mulvale took this idea one step further when she asked Brown to take the message back to Ottawa that the feds - together with other levels of government - must work toward a con crete solution to the affordable housing shortage. "This is a step, but it doesn't address the wider issue," said Mulvale. "Shelter is a right for people o f all income brackets - is a right for all Canadians." Woodside Mews is ideal for seniors whose cur rent homes are too big and require more upkeep than they can handle. Because of the services pro vided. seniors can "age in place" longer than if they stayed put in a much bigger home. The garden homes offer specious, 1,000-1,400 sq. ft. layouts with attached garages, private patios, covered verandas, bay windows and other features such as wider doorways for wheelchairs and more. According to Len Warrington, president of Trafalgar Senior Homes, 22 of the homes have been sold. "Very soon we'll be able to say we're sold out," he said. Bianbel & Associates Design and Construction Limited, will carry out construction with a com pletion date set for Jan. 15, 2002. There are more than 45 Life Lease communi ties in Ontario with an estimated 10 to 12 projects completed each year. Graham can be contacted at 338-1657.
