www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, October 30, 2015 | 14 Historic St. Luke's Church moving -- but not far from home by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff The historic St. Luke's Anglican Church is on the move today (Friday), but not far. As part of a $2.3-million project, the church, at Dundas Street West and Valleyridge Drive, will move a few feet to the northeast on the same property to accommodate the construction of a much-needed parish centre where the church now stands. The place of worship was erected in 1845 and has been a deeply important part of the Palermo community ever since. "It was built by the original settlers of the area," said St. Luke's Anglican Church Reverend Jeff Ward. "They were initially worshiping at the foundry owned by William Peacock on Old Bronte Road. On Sundays, after they worshipped, they'd go over to the property and work on building the church and then they would all head home." The church still has a significant following with a congregation made up of about 100 families. For the last six months, the group has been holding services in the Palermo Schoolhouse as the church is prepared for its relocation and the parish centre project. Ward expects the congregation to be back in St. Luke's in March 2016 when the project is completed. He said the project is necessary because of Reverends Sue-Ann Ward and Jeff Ward are pictured in front of the historic St. Luke's Anglican Church that is currently being moved across the property to make room for a new community centre. "This is going to be an opportunity for lots of people in the community to use this space for different activities," said Ward. "Our intention is to meet whatever the needs of the community are. Much of the programming will be for seniors and children and youth. We've got the Palermo Village Retirement Residence next door and we have Palermo Public School across the street." Ward said the parish centre would have a large hall with a commercial kitchen and several meeting spaces on the main floor and lower level. He said the project, which is being funded by the Anglican Diocese of Niagara, is 20 years in the making. "Certainly, we've been working towards this very hard over the last eight years," said Ward. "The people who have been at the church are very excited about the fact that after so much work with the developer, the Town and with people in the community, we are finally going to be able to have this facility, which is going to be available to everyone in the community." This is not the first time the church has been moved. In 1950, the facility was moved forward on its property so a basement could be constructed. The existing cemetery on the site will be maintained and continue in service.
