D4 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 27, 2001 Coyotes hoping to turn it around for playoffs Time to pop the cork on the champagne! Hardly, but the Oakville Coyotes junior A roller hockey team played three games this past week and won two -- a first for this season. Behind solid goaltending of Frank Doyle and Ryan Miehm the Coyotes won 12-9 in Brampton Sunday and 7-6 in Vaughan. The only blemish came Saturday afternoon in Hamilton where the home squad dropped a 6-2 decision to the Firewheels. "I thought it was one of our best games on Saturday against Hamilton," remarked assistant coach Garry O'Donnell. "We just could not finish against them." The star of the weekend games had to be Joel Ward who regis tered three goals and 10 assists during the weekend with seven assists coming against Brampton. Other standouts were Stu MacCrimmon who scored five goals against Brampton and added two assists. Sean Snider had a strong game in Vaughan notching three goals and setting up two. Geoff Asselstine also had an impressive day against Brampton with three goals and an assist. Sunday afternoon also marked the first of many junior `A' games for a pair of bantam call-ups Kelly Vietch and Alex Pryde who showed they are ready to make the jump to junior. Both played strong games with Pryde picking up a pair of crucial assists late in the game. "These two have great hands and foot speed," noted Jay Labelle. "You could not help but appreciate the future of the team today, after watching these guys play." Tlie Coyotes next game is this Friday (June 29) at Oakville Arena, 8:00p.m., against the defending Walter Gretzky Cup cham pion Toronto Tigers. Come on out and support your home team! Tarah Campbell and Lesia O'Brien were the pitchers with other outstanding plays made by Amanda Palmeter at second and Kate Ruediger at third. On the late winning goal, defender Kenton Carr-Hall fed a long pass to Dylan Husar who smartly deflected the ball over to co-striker Jeffrey Peel who made no mistake with a soft touch past the Mississauga keeper. The win avenged a 2-0 loss just four days earlier to Mississauga. Keeping their momentum after reaching the final of the Mississauga International tournament, the Oakville Titans U -11 `A' rep soccer team forged their way to a 3-2 win over the Burlington Strikers `AA' rep team, in what is sure to become a great rivalry. Oakville opened up a 2-0 lead with a Dylan Husar bullet the lone goal of the first half and then Jeffrey Peel adding a chip shot over the goalie in the second half. Burlington fought back to make it 2-1 but the Titans responded within minutes when team co-captain Anthony Scalia lofted a perfect ball into the top corner to restore Oakville's two goal lead. Burlington managed a late score but it wasn't enough as Oakville prevailed 3-2. This was the Titans first victory as a team in their SRSL first division league play. Earlier in the week the Titans bat tled to a 1-1 draw with Bolton. Team co-captain Jonathan Volpatti scored the Oakville goal.
