Province funds new French-language high school by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 13 | Thursday, November 5, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Students, teachers and staff at École secondaire Gaétan-Gervais will finally have a place to call their own come September 2017. Ontario Labour Minister and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn announced Friday the provincial government is investing $12.9 million into building a new French-language high school at 1055 McCraney St. E. École secondaire Gaétan-Gervais has been sharing a school facility with École élémentaire Du Chêne for the past three years at 150 Ridge Dr. -- the location of Friday morning's announcement. The Conseil Scolaire Viamonde (CSV) school board, students, parents, and community members had been lobbying for Gaétan-Gervais to have its own space for a few years, with their most recent campaign led by their Grade 8 students late last year. The students wrote Madeleine Meilleur, Minister responsible for Francophone affairs, explaining why they needed a new secondary school in order to pursue their education in French. They asked for an age-appropriate library, a cafeteria, a gymnasium, more spacious change rooms, and specialized classrooms. On behalf of Ontario Education Minister Liz Sandals, Flynn told students the government is excited to invest in the CSV's plan that will enhance learning opportunities for Francophone students. "Schools like École élémentaire Du Chêne and École secondaire Gaétan-Gervais provide students with a welcoming environment, not just to learn the required curriculum, but to become well-rounded citizens and future leaders of our community," he said. Flynn noted the community worked hard to achieve what it has to date. "It's going to be pretty exciting to see the official groundbreaking for the school's new home next spring," he said. "It's going to be even more exciting to see the hundreds of students that will enter through the doors of the new school in fall of 2017." The new facility will replace a 62-year-old structure on the eastern parcel of surplus lands next to White Oaks Secondary School's north campus. It will house 392 students from Grades 7-12. CSV has also partnered with the Halton District School Board (HDSB) and Town of Oakville so that students and staff will have access to soccer pitches, baseball see Local on p.16 10%off All you can EAt Buffet (Lunch or Dinner Tues - Fri) staurant Sweets & Re Ontario Labour Minister and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn announced Friday the provincial government is investing $12.9 million into building a new French-language high school at 1055 McCraney St. E.
