www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 5, 2015 | 20 Veterans can transition into good-paying employment continued from p.18 with his skillset and he has been working in his field since finishing school. "A lot of people in the military don't know where to turn. They think they are stuck in the military and that's what they have to do or it is too late to do anything else," said Frizzle. "Programs like this give them the awareness that there are other things out there. The lifestyle is similar, being in a team environment and working with your hands," said the veteran. Ontario College of Trades' Registrar David Tsubouchi spoke about the reasons the college introduced the program, noting it started over a year ago when thenchair Ron Johnson was approached by former Brigadier General Greg Matte who was heading up Helmets to Hardhats. Matte made a presentation to the college's board of governors who loved the idea of a program to help veterans. "What a great idea this is. Here are these guys who are out there. They are putting their lives at risk, they are defending our country and doing all this for us so isn't it incumbent upon us to help them make a transition back into a really good living?" asked Tsubouchi. He said this program is not only good for someone coming out of the Armed Forces, but it is also beneficial for someone going into the Armed Forces as they have that peace of mind that when their time with the military is over, they can transition to a well-paying civilian job. Even people who are still in the military can do their Trade Equivalency Assessment so they can hit the ground running when, and if, they decide to leave, said Tsubouchi.
