On Saturday (Oct. 31), students from the school's environmental club published a YouTube music video they produced on saving Bala Falls in Muskoka, Ont. In April, the group parodied Taylor Swift's Blank Space in a campaign calling on the Canadian government to help stop climate change. The most recent video is a parody of Messengers by rapper LeCrae featuring Australian band For King and Country. At the heart of the matter is a 4.5-megawatt hydroelectric station, which Swift River Energy Ltd. proposes to build at the Bala Falls site. The proposal is not sitting well with many Bala residents, who feel the project will destroy the area's scenic beauty, and possibly the community itself. "I am extremely proud that the students wanted to take on another video, especially to bring awareness to an important local issue," said Heather Rutkowski, science teacher at Holy Trinity. Rutkowski's class, along with Holy Trinity's environmental club, put together the Swift parody video, which, to date, has 6,408 views. The Fight for Bala Music Video, which was produced by approximately 18 Holy Trinity students and filmed in the Town of Bala, had 720 views as of the Oakville Beaver's Thursday press deadline. see Students on p.45 An Oakville family won't have to worry about buying groceries for a year after competing in the premiere episode of a new reality cooking competition TV series. The Incredible Food Race, a six-episode series for Food Network Canada that premiered last Wednesday (Oct. 28), pits two families against each other for a chance to win the grand prize of a year's supply of free groceries. "We had a lot of laughs and surprisingly very few altercations in the kitchen," said Dirk Snyman, who competed with his wife Marusa, and children Kerry, Kevin and Sean. "The worst part was not being able to eat our own culinary creations at the end of the show when we were all ravenous... (but) the win, of course, was the Dirk Snyman cherry on top -- a year of guilt free shopping, thanks to Walmart Canada." On each episode, families are pitted against each other to perform three challenges to win advantages in the final competition -- a cookoff. "It has been a very exciting family journey being a part of The Incredible Food Race," said Marusa. "From making new friends to learning firsthand about the industry and how to prepare an entire meal with a few paring knives." During the premiere episode, the Snymans suffered a disadvantage after losing one of the three challenges and could only use paring knives to prepare a main dish and two sides for the cookoff.
