John was born in Westmorland, England, but moved with his family to Ayrshire, Scotland in 1935. Later he attended Glasgow University while doing an aeronautical apprenticeship with Scottish Aviation at Prestwick Airport. Following graduation with first class honours in engineering, and a year of postgraduate research at the university, he joined the Royal Air Force. His time in the RAF was mostly spent as a technical officer on a fighter station in Germany with the British Air Forces of Occupation. He left the RAF in 1952. During that period, he obtained his glider pilot licence. Upon leaving the RAF, he married Mary, his life-long love of over 60 years and they moved to Manchester, England, where he worked for the A.V. Roe company on the "Vulcan" delta-wing bomber. In 1957, he and Mary and two-year old son Andrew immigrated to Canada. He joined deHavilland Aircraft of Canada as a stress engineer working on the DHC-4 Caribou. He stayed with the company for 35 years until his retirement in 1992. During that period, he was involved in all of the company's projects, including the Caribou, Turbo-Beaver, Buffalo, Twin Otter, Dash-7, Dash-8 and the FHE-400 hydrofoil ship. Shortly after the company was purchased in 1986 by the Boeing Company of Seattle, he was appointed Vice-President of Engineering at a time when the DHC-8 Series 300 was under development. He was an active member of the Canadian Aviation and Space Institute and served as its President in 1991-92. He received the J.A.D. McCurdy Award in 1991 for his contributions to Canadian aviation. Following retirement from deHavilland, he worked as a consultant to several start-up aviation companies and acted as a Design Approval Representative Structures, for Transport Canada until the age of 80. Apart from a life-long fascination with aircraft, he loved travel, classical music, and ballroom as well as Scottish Country dancing; but most of all his wife Mary, children Andrew, Elaine and Ian, and grandchildren Jacquie, John, Stuart, William and greatgranddaughter Ella. A celebration of life will be at Ward Funeral Home, 109 Reynolds Street, Oakville, on Friday, November 6th from 1-3 p.m. Reflections at 2 p.m. Please visit the Book of Memories at www.WardFuneralHome.com Born in 1939 in Montreal, Heather started her career as a registered nurse (Kingston General Hospital School of Nursing, `61). From her career in nursing she was drawn to a career in the management and delivery of residential care services for people with disabilities, as the founding chair of Halton Cheshire Homes. Over time, Heather's career evolved into the management of professional associations; most recently as CEO for 23 years with the Canadian Association of Management Consultants where she was widely acknowledged as an innovator, who elevated and brought credibility to the profession, in Canada, and internationally through setting up consulting associations in the Caribbean and Kazakhstan, and an educational program for consulting in India. Engaged in many activities, the competitive side of Heather's nature was indulged by her interest in bridge, golf, and fishing around the world. As successful as Heather was in all her endeavours, the most compelling thing we loved, admired and will miss most about Mum, is that she was loving to her very core, with her children, stepchildren, friends and colleagues, all of whom felt the comfort and blessing of her gifts as a listener, friend, and advisor. Heather's outgoing nature charmed and captivated all who knew her. Faith was an important part of Heather's life, and in latter years she welcomed the opportunity to participate in even more meaningful ways through her activities with St. Simon's. Her deep faith helped to provide peace during her final days, and her family drew strength from her serenity. Visitation was held on Sunday, November 1st from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 9:00 p.m. at the Oakview Funeral Home, 56 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville. The funeral service was held on Monday, November 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at St. Simon's Anglican Church, 1450 Litchfield Road, Oakville; reception followed in MacKay Hall. At the family's request, please do not send flowers; if desired, donations can be made in Heather's memory to The St. Simons Sustainability Fund, or to Ian Anderson House whose excellent care Heather loved in her final days.
