According to Value Change Management International, more than $31 billion worth of food is wasted every year in Canada. This despite the fact one in eight Canadian families -- including one in seven in Halton -- struggle to put food on the table. To that end -- and in conjunction with the recent Waste Reduction Week (Oct. 1925) -- Halton's Food for Life continues to boost awareness and support of its food reclamation program. With aid from a number of supermarkets and other agencies, Food for Life aims to conquer the battle against food waste and hunger simultaneously. Last year, the organization diverted 2.1 million pounds of food destined for landfills to provide healthy meals for people in need, serving approximately 100 agencies and food banks in Halton. In September, Food for Life celebrated a milestone when it received more than 40,000 pounds of fresh food in a nine-hour period. "Our record day was a great testament to the socially-responsible organizations that recognize the need to work together to fight against the issues of food waste and hunger," said Food for Life Executive Director Brenda Hajdu. "It is because of these partnerships that we are able to protect our environment while providing fresh, nutritious food to people in need."
