Eleven members of Georgetown's Christian Reformed Church (GCRC) are in Belize working on a school construction project. The team left Tuesday and are scheduled to return February 17. The team chose to work with World Wide Christian Schools (WCS) for this project. The mission of WCS is to work through indigenous organizations, helping them to develop sustainable Christian schools where they are needed most. Over the last few months the team has raised more than $10,000 to ensure the required building materials arrive at the site in time. Many local companies participated in the fund-raising as well as the congregation. Each team member was responsible to cover their own airfare and expenses in Belize amounting to nearly $1,500. All of the materials were purchased in Belize to help stimulate the local economy. In recent years GCRC teams have been sent to Mississippi, Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Honduras. The team consists of a wide variety of local talent that includes a structural engineer, an arborist, a carpenter, farmer, teachers, an electrician, a painter, a concrete specialist, a student and a construction manager. Team members are: Kris Adema, Bryan Flikkema, Albert Grin, Gerald Kamminga, Dale Menken, Dan Roffel, Ray Scheepstra, Cecil Simpson, Will Rypstra, David Westerveld and Paul Westerveld.
