Spencer Troop's last-second lay-up was the clinching basket for the host Georgetown Rebels as they earned a spot in today's Halton AAAA senior boys' high school hoops championship against Burlington's Notre Dame by defeating Assumption 39-38 in Thursday's semi-final. Troop finished the game with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Dalton Olinoski led the Rebels with 14 points and Gavin Viray-Cox made the pass inside to Troop for the winning play with just six seconds left in regulation time. Brett Neumann's free throw with less than a minute to play got the Rebels back to within a point of the Crusaders. After three years of heartbreaking losses at the preliminary stage, the Rebels make their return to the Halton championship game Wednesday at Oakville's Sheridan College against Burlington's Notre Dame, which finished the regular season at 8-2. It's a 6:15 p.m. tip-off at the Oakville campus. Georgetown's seniors also ended up finishing second in the league standings with an 8-2 mark. After a three-year, 28-game undefeated streak in the Halton loop's regular season, the Rebels lost to Milton District and Bishop Reding last week before pulling off the playoff victory over Burlington's Assumption. In other post-season play, Georgetown's Christ the King's junior Jaguars beat Oakville-Trafalgar 44-41 in their openinground game, then lost to Holy Trinity 66-42 in the Halton quarter-finals on Thursday. The GDHS junior Rebels were knocked out by Burlington Central 50-42 in the first round. The Acton senior Bearcats were eliminated from the Halton league's playoffs after a 41-32 loss at Burlington Central. Christ the King's senior Jaguars lost 75-37 at home to Oakville's St. Ignatius Loyola.
