The Acton Sports Action Park (ASAP) Committee turned over a cheque for $100,000 to the Town of Halton Hills last week. The money was raised by the committee over the past eight months for the 3 Musketears Skateboard Park to be built in Acton later this year. "The support came from all of Halton Hills, and businesses and people from throughout Halton," said committee member Clark Somerville. "We really need to take our hats off to this committee," said Mayor Rick Bonnette. "It's a very small group of people who were very dedicated for five years." The committee agreed to raise $100,000 for the project, and the rest of the money for the park-- $104,000-- is included in the Town of Halton Hills 2006 budget. Rakesh Mistry, Town of Halton Hills Parks Design and Construction Co-ordinator, said the Town hopes to begin construction on the park, to be located at the northwest corner of the Acton Arena & Community Centre this fall. Construction is to take 8-14 weeks and, weather permitting, Mistry said they hope to have the park completed later this fall, with an official opening set for next spring. The park is designed for skateboarders, in-line skaters and BMX bike users. The design calls for stairs, hubba ledges, rails, fun box, hips, banked corners and a straight ledge. The design elements are based on the results of surveys sent to Acton area schools. Mistry said the park will be different from the skateboard park in Georgetown, which is based on a central hub design. The Acton park will be more linear with a circuit system.
