Holy Cross pastor ordained as Auxiliary Bishop

LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Reverend Peter Hundt was ordained Tuesday as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Toronto. Bishop Hundt, the pastor at Georgetown's Holy Cross Parish from 1994 until earlier this month, was ordained at the Cathedral of the Christ the King in Hamilton with the Archbishop of Toronto, Aloysius Cardinal Ambrozic, officiating.

Three busloads of parishioners from the Georgetown church were at the ordination. "I am honoured to have been appointed a Bishop by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI," said Bishop Hundt. "I approach today's ordination with gratitude and a commitment to do my best to be worthy of this appointment, and of the trust that has been placed in me."

Hundt, who will celebrate a mass of thanksgiving at Holy Cross Church tonight (Friday), said he will miss the Georgetown parish. "It's a wonderful parish and I've really enjoyed being the pastor there." Bishop Hundt will begin his work with the Archdiocese of Toronto on June 1, and will be officially welcomed with a celebration at St. Michael's Cathedral in Toronto June 21. Father David Wynen, of Oakville, will be the new pastor at Holy Cross. He will start June 28. (Lisa Tallyn can be reached at ltallyn@independentfreepress.com)
