The Georgetown Lioness Club celebrated its 35th anniversary June 17 at Ares Restaurant with three charter members present. Joyce Gosling, Kay Ledwidge and Rita Zorge, all of who remain active in the club today, joined present members and spouses to mark the milestone. The Lioness objective has always been to live up to their motto, "We serve." There has never been a shortage of requests for assistance from individuals in need and organizations so the Lioness attempted to raise funds to meet those needs. Some of the early fundraisers included rummage and bake sales, bazaars, dances, booths at the fall fairs and plowing match, ladies only nights, Dreams-for-a-day contests and bingo. The Lioness have been visible during the Christmas season by sponsoring the Christmas Hamper-Good Neighbour programs for many years, as well as entering a float in the Santa Claus Parade and the Christmas Craft Auction. The Lioness have supported the community by donating to Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills, Halton Women's Place, North Halton Distress Centre, Halton Hills Community Support and information youth programs, Georgetown Hospital, Salvation Army, Georgetown Bread Basket and the Agricultural Society. They have also supported programs beyond their local community with contributions to camp Dorset Dialysis Camp, the Lions Foundation of Canada Guide Dog Program, Camp Trillium-- a camp for children with cancer-- and Sight First. In more recent years they have hosted the Kilometre of Koins, a Wellness Day program, mystery dinners and silent auctions.
