For the first time in the 40-year history of the prestigious Robbie International youth soccer tournament in Scarborough, a Georgetown Soccer Club team scored a division championship victory, as the shorthanded Mustangs knocked off all opponents in their path on their way to the under-13 girls' division title. The win was especially sweet for coach Tony Glen's squad as the Mustangs lost in the 2005 Robbie final as under-12s to the top-ranked team in the province, Brams United Blaze. And this year, Georgetown entered the tourney without vacationing midfielders Leslie Hale and Olivia Butty, with striker Natasha Green checking out in the roundrobin segment due to a knee injury. Under-12 Mustangs' star midfielder Jade Kovacevic was called up and helped bolster the tireless foursome of Jacqueline Lence, Jaden Todd, Nicole Waters and Amanda Knoepfli, as Georgetown also employed a stingy defence to defeat two top-10 Ontario Soccer Association-rated teams, Kitchener and Scarborough United, en route to the championship. Lence netted the winner in the Mustangs' 1-0 triumph over Kitchener in the semi-finals, while Todd's brilliant 25yard strike opened the scoring in the 3-1 decision against Scarborough in the final. Preliminary round-- Georgetown 4, London United 2: Nicole Waters (2G); Jacqueline Lence, Shannon Plant (G). Georgetown 7, Clairlea 0: Courtney Barber, Jade Kovacevic (2G); Jacqueline Lence, Natasha Green, Shannon Plant (G). Georgetown 2, Brams United B 1: Natasha Green, Plant (G). Semi-final-- Georgetown 1, Kitchener 0: Lence (G). Championship-- Georgetown 3, Scarborough 1: Todd, Plant, Sheena Glen (G).
