Heather MacKinnon from Christ the King Secondary School is looking forward to having input into decisions at the Halton Catholic District School Board in her new role as student trustee. MacKinnon, a Grade 11 student, has been selected to represent north Halton at the board table. She was one of three new student trustees welcomed recently to the board for the 20062007 term. Other student trustees are Ryan Durran, Grade 11 student at Assumption Secondary School (Burlington) and Jaclyn Peluso, a Grade 10 student at St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School (Oakville). MacKinnon, an honour roll student, looks forward to working with her fellow student trustees, board trustees and administration in the continuation and development of Catholic education in Halton. She has honed her communication and leadership skills through active participation in her parish, involvement in public speaking and as valedictorian of St. Francis of Assisi School in 2003. She is an active volunteer in the community, having worked on local fundraisers Crop for Cancer and Relay for Hope. She has also been a member of the yearbook committee and has a part-time retail job. MacKinnon is looking forward to supporting and encouraging north Halton students to become more involved in both their school and the Catholic community. Student trustees have the same rights as other trustees to participate at board meetings and committee meetings, but they can't vote or attend in-camera sessions. MacKinnon replaces Anthony Luna, another Christ the King Secondary School student, who served from 2004 to 2006.
