Bantam Hawks claim gold
Starting pitcher Kendyl Valenta struck out eight batters over seven innings and walked just two, leading the Halton Hills Bantam Hawks to an 8-4 victory over Ancaster to capture the championship title in the 10th annual tournament they hosted last weekend at Glen Williams. Forty-six teams took part in the 2006 Halton Hills Kerr Machine Shop Group Summer Tournament, which was broken up into six age groups and played at four diamonds around the area. Jaimie Campbell was an offensive catalyst for the bantam Hawks, nearly hitting for the cycle, with a homer, triple and single, while Tori Marcil made an unassisted double play to end the fourth inning that snuffed out an Ancaster rally. The MVP for the final, Anna Smelsky, knocked out a key triple for a two-hit game. Preliminary round-- Halton Hills 6, Byron 1: Taylor Box (MVP). Ancaster 5, Halton Hills 1: Caitlin Sunnucks (MVP). Halton Hills 8, Newmarket 2: Kendyl Valenta (MVP). Semi-final- Halton Hills 9, Cambridge 2: Jaimie Campbell (MVP). Gold medal game-- Halton Hills 8, Ancaster 4: Anna Smelsky (MVP). Tournament here last weekend, the only two games the host Hawks lost were to the eventual gold and silver medalist teams in the division held at the Georgetown Fairgrounds. Halton Hills shrugged off those defeats and pounded Stratford to capture third place out of eight teams entered. Preliminary round-- Mississauga North 5, Halton Hills 3: Rachel Bridges (10 Ks); Samantha Lawr, Jasmine Moore, Ashley Attard (RBI); Moore (MVP). Halton Hills 10, Cambridge 1: Bridges (8 Ks, MVP); Attard (5 Ks, 2B); Emma Keefe (2 RBIs). Halton Hills 14, Kitchener 8: Chelsea D'Avilar (2 Ks, MVP); Cassandra DiMascio (3 RBIs); Bridges, Attard (2 RBIs); Colby Guest (RBI). Semi-final-- Brampton #1 17, Halton Hills 2: Lawr (MVP); D'Avilar, Bridges (RBI). Bronze medal game-- Halton Hills 10, Stratford 2: Rachel Stewart (MVP); Moore, Keefe, Bridges (HRs); Keefe, Attard, DiMascio, Lawr (RBIs). Champions Other division winners from the Halton Hills tournament were: Mite-- Brampton Blazers; Squirt II-- St. Catharines Wildcats; Novice I-- Brampton Blazers; Novice II-- Napanee Express; Midget II-- St. Marys.Jasmine Moore (right) of the Halton Hills Hawks is tagged out by North Mississauga Tigers' catcher Jenna Lehoux during the opening game in the mite division of the Hawks' annual girls' fastpitch tournament at the Georgetown Fairgrounds on Friday evening. It turned out to be a crucial play as North Mississauga held on for a 5-3 victory, although Hawks went on to earn bronze medals in their division, beating Stratford 10-2 in the third-place game.
