Fire damage set at $250,000

An early morning fire Thursday at a Trafalgar Rd. business caused approximately $250,000 damage. Halton Hills firefighters responded to Agram Meats south of Stewarttown at approximately 4:30 a.m. when a patrolling Halton Regional Police officer noticed smoke coming from basement windows at the business. "With the building being secured, crews had to force entry to the building and were met with thick smoke from floor to ceiling," said Halton Hills Fire Protection and Prevention Services Director of Fire Services Bob Meads. "Conditions like this make it very difficult for fire crews to make their way into a structure." Firefighters encountered smoke coming up from the basement, where the fire started, and a large hole burned through the main level floor of the building when they got inside. Approximately 26 firefighters worked to bring the fire under control. There were no injuries. A spokesperson for the fire department said the damage estimate included damage to the structure and products in the store. He said the cause of the blaze was still under investigation but at press time it was believed to have been electrical.
