Rebels slosh way to win over Jags

Heavy rain from the previous evening kept the offences for both Christ the King's Jaguars and the host Georgetown Rebels in check, but the latter were able to get an early boost and held on for a 15-6 victory over the Jags Thursday in Halton Secondary School Athletic Association senior boys' football action. Kick returner Andrew Cannell took a CTK punt from his own goal line early in the first quarter and brought it back the length of the field for a major score, and by halftime, the Rebels had built a 15-0 lead. Tailback John Leckie, who scored five touchdowns in an opening-week Georgetown romp over Milton, also rambled into the end zone during the second quarter of Thursday's matchup. "We didn't do much in the first quarter except for Andrew's runback. (CTK) shut us down pretty well," said Rebels' coach Randy Marinangeli. "The field was slick and we're a fair-weather offence, so the sloppy stuff doesn't do us much good. I thought we could have scored two more touchdowns but I'm sure their coach is saying that as well." The Jaguars didn't quit and put together a long drive to start the fourth quarter, only to turn the ball over on downs at the Georgetown goal line. The Rebels fumbled the ball right back to their Division II rivals, with Jags' quarterback Alex Dezan finding receiver Steve Ples for a short touchdown pass, but that's all the scoring that took place. Placekicker Anthony Van Kooten had three single points for the home side. The 2-0 Rebels will travel to Pearson for their next contest today (Wednesday), while the Jaguars are on the road to Milton. The junior teams for both Georgetown schools were shut out in their opening games, with the Jags falling 480 at St. Thomas Aquinas and the Rebels losing 33-0 to Milton District.
