Councillor Moya Johnson questioned whether the configuration of Main St. N. at Guelph St. was to blame for a truck crashing into a garage last month. According to Director of Engineering, Public Works and Building Services Rick Henry, a safety audit done on the road before its 2001-2002 reconstruction indicated that there were 12 accidents in the five years before reconstruction and 11 in the five years after. He said while the Halton Police report is still being finalized, police did impound the vehicle and its mechanical fitness is being evaluated. "Have there been other similar accidents along that road? Could it possibly be the road design or it's just a one-off?," asked Johnson. Henry said the road was reconstructed according to the recommendations of the safety audit. The accidents, he said, are not similar in nature to the October one, but involved making right turns onto Main St. N., rear-ending or wrong lane changes.
