Tips to report an impaired driver

The Halton Region overwhelmingly supports the fight against impaired driving. Operation Lookout asks for concerned citizens, businesses and sponsors to do their part and report or promote the reporting of impaired drivers. Signs of an impaired driver may include, excessive speed, unreasonably slow speeds, or inconsistent speeds; dangerous passing, swerving, overtaking then slowing down; total disregard for traffic signals or signs; driving at night without lights; failing to lower high beams, or driving with windows open in cold or rainy weather. You likely have seen these behaviors in the past, and you likely do carry a cell phone, and this is probably the only time I'll encourage you to make a cell phone call while driving. When you call the police to report your suspicions of an impaired driver please have the following information ready: Location and direction of travel of the suspected impaired driver. Are you currently observing the driver, or did you observe the driver 2, 5, 10, or 30 minutes ago? The licence plate number, make, model, colour and any other distinguishing features of the suspected vehicle. Finally anything you can describe about the driver. Remember that you suspect this driver to be impaired, do not put yourself in harms way to obtain this information. Let your common sense prevail. Continue to obey traffic laws, signals and signs, and keep your distance from this driver.
