Letters to the editor...Replace traffic lights with roundabouts

Dear editor, Re: Recent letters from Marilyn Brown letter and Joe Caldarelli concerning traffic. PLEASE! No more traffic lights! The world seems obsessed with traffic lights. They are expensive, require maintenance and I believe are an antiquated way to manage traffic flow, especially in rural areas. The solution is simple: roundabouts. Having driven extensively in the U.K., I cannot understand why this very useful method of traffic control is not used in Canada more. A roundabout was recently installed in Cambridge at a similar three-way junction to t he Ninth Line/Steeles Ave one, and it works beautifully. No matter what your intended direction, everyone makes a right-hand turn, and there is no issue with cutting across opposing traffic. Yes, a little more real estate may be needed, but after you get used to them, roundabouts are a pleasure to use. Imagine being able to drive from Mississauga to Georgetown without ever stopping once for a traffic light. Chris Willson, Georgetown
