Area residents will have a chance to take in a current movie at a reduced ticket price and give to three different cancer organizations at the same time through a unique fund-raiser organized by two local sisters to be held later this month. Heather and Karen MacKinnon, Grades 12 and 10 Christ the King students, are hosting the event at Georgetown Cinemas 3 Thursday, Jan. 11 beginning at 6 p.m. The sisters decided to raise money for Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills (CAS-HH), the Canadian Cancer Society and the children's cancer wing of Credit Valley Hospital because their four-year-old brother, Alex Ringuette, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in 2005 and all three organizations have played a role in their family's journey with cancer. The girls also know several other area youths who have cancer and have been helped through the organizations. They said Alex is doing well but continues to have regular chemotherapy treatments at Credit Valley Hospital. Georgetown Cinemas is owned by the girls' grandfather, Danny Edwards. They are hoping that as many people as possible will come out to see movies that night and stop by the lobby before the movies start to watch while at least eight people get their hair cut and heads shaved. All of the hair will be donated to Angel Locks, an organization that provides wigs for children who have cancer. The three movies that will be playing will be Rocky Balboa, Eragon, and Night at the Museum. They will start at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and will include a small popcorn and small pop as well as a chance to win a door prize. A total of $5.50 of each admission ticket will go to the charities. At 6 p.m. Heather MacKinnon and others will be in the lobby of the cinema having their hair cut and heads shaved by staff from Great Expectations Salon on Main St. All of the hair will go to Angel Locks.
Heather McKinnon (front) has her hair checked out by sister Karen and brother Alex as the two girls prepare to hold a fund-raiser which includes having Heather's head shaved, and a movie night at Georgetown Cinema January 11. The event will be in aid of Canadian Cancer Society, Cancer Assistance Services-Halton Hills (CAS-HH) and Credit Valley Hospital, where Alex has been receiving chemotherapy to battle leukemia.
