Fighting siblings win gold, silver

Acton's sister and brother boxing duo-- Heather and Cameron Heather McIsaac-- battled their way to silver and gold recently at the annual Brampton Cup Boxing Tournament held by the Bramalea Boxing Club. More than 240 boxers from across Canada made the trek to Brampton for the three-day event. Sixteen-year-old Cameron's first bout had him up against Sault Ste. Marie's Tim Smith. Smith came out hard for the first round but was no match against McIssac who dominated him early in the second round before Smith's coaches threw in the towel. McIsaac's second bout of the weekend had him working hard to keep his first-place position against Moses Tabor of Saskatchewan. This fight started with a fast pace and remained that way for the duration of the three rounds as both fighters exhibited fast jabs and slick moves. In the end McIsaac was edged slightly and lost the decision on points, taking home the silver medal in his division. Heather McIsaac, 14, took on Kasondra Joseph of Sault Saint Marie and showed the appreciative crowd of several hundred why she deserved to take home the gold medal. From the opening bell McIsaac landed accurate jabs, hooks and straight rights. As the fight went on Joseph tired and was soon overwhelmed by McIsaac's power. The judges stopped the fight as McIsaac outscored her opponent by more than 15 points. McIsaac's next fight is scheduled for February 23 at the Hamilton Convention Centre, were she will be on the undercard of a mixed amateur-professional boxing show. She will be take on her Windsor rival Shelby Bialkowski. The young fighters train at the Big Tyme Boxing Club in Orangeville and are coached by three-time Canadian middleweight champion Bryon Mackie.
