Weather hampers downtown reconstruction

Despite some setbacks due to snow and cold weather, work is proceeding on the Main St. reconstruction project in downtown Georgetown. Ron Goddard, manager of engineering design and capital works, updated Town council on the status of the project at last week's council meeting. One change has already been made with the erection of hydro poles on one side of the street-- to allow for the speedier demolition of the centre island (where the street lights are currently located). Aecon, the contractor, was expected to commence the demolition of the centre island and bump-outs last week so that the underground installations could begin this week (March 12-16), subject to weather conditions. Goddard said the weather has "caused us some grief, in the last week or so." The Town began the project midwinter so that it would be completed in time for the Georgetown Homecoming 2007 at the end of July. Wards 3&4 Regional Councillor Jane Fogal commended Town staff for doing its utmost to minimize the disruption to businesses in the core.
