Acton Seniors Centre welcomes new board members

Acton Seniors Centre We welcome the new board members who have been appointed to the various chairs for the Acton Seniors Centre. President Margaret Anderson, past president Dave Dodgson, vice-president Mary Walsma, treasurer Pat Frizzell, and new committee chairs are Jane McAllister, programs; Dobbie Frizzell, property; Jill Tetreault, membership; Joanne Bissonnette, fundraising, and Betty Green will return once again as the travel chair. Completing their elected terms are Eileen Dix, secretary; Julie Conroy, public relations; Victor Bissonnette, social; Mike Milligan, security; Alice Clarke, transportation/reception. Councillor Jon Hurst will remain as our council liaison. There is a penny table set up on a table near the reception area. Many people like to buy tickets over several weeks as they think it doubles their chances of winning one of the lovely prizes. The winning tickets will be drawn on Saturday, May 12 at the bazaar and luncheon. Two spring trips to look forward to: On Wednesday, April 18, Dinner Theatre in Niagara Falls featuring a show called Oh Canada Eh? and wine tasting at Kittling Ridge. The second trip on Wednesday, May 23 is a Progressive Dinner in the St. Jacobs and Elora area. You start with soup or salad in Baden, drive on to Kennedy's (built in 1856) for rolled ribs, scalloped potatoes and vegetables, and then stop at Picards' Peanuts in Elora for tea/coffee and cookies. Sounds like fun and a great way of exploring several different restaurants. Gloria Barker feels she is to blame for the giant snowstorm recently (March 1). She joined the the centre to play bid euchre (although she is only 39?) and they closed the centre after only two games. She was very determined to play and was back again the next week with Phyllis Lewis. Muriel Dzierla had the only mooner. Last week only Elma Braida had a mooner. The carpet bowlers had eight members show up in spite of the snow and Stella Brunelle's Brown team beat Betty Lockerbie's Black team, 17- to 6. Judging by the laughter and screams, everyone enjoyed the afternoon. The next week Margaret tells me there were seven carpet bowlers and although they were lacking in numbers their enthusiasm made up for it. Nives Bozic's Brown team beat Ivor Bozic's Black team, 8-5. Last Monday, Marg Haring's Brown team beat Marg Neilson's Black team, 16-12. The dart players are up and running every Monday morning after a short break, and they are issuing a challenge to anyone who would like to play. You don't have to be experienced, just willing to spend a couple of hours here at the centre having fun, and listening to the ribald remarks from Donna and Dave. The last session of line dancing was at the centre. Everyone has enjoyed the music and exercise. Liz certainly kept us moving to the music. April 3rd is an afternoon to look forward to. There will be someone here talking about astrology and tarot cards. Come and get some information on these interesting subjects. One lucky person will win a tarot card reading. Marion Storey is busy planning the Spring bazaar and luncheon on Saturday, May 12, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be crafts, draws, baking, plants, both indoor and outdoor, books and puzzles. If you would like more information call Marion, 519853-1098 We have another knitting project at the centre. Shield Foster read about groups knitting Izzy Dolls and would like to see if we can take up the challenge. One group has made 400 and she would like to beat that. The World Peace Day organizers are looking for people to knit these dolls for war-torn countries. Canadian Master Corporal Mark R. Isfeld (Izzy to his friends) saw a doll being used to teach children about the dangers of mine fields. His mother started to knit dolls and send them to him. Ironically he was killed by a mine (while serving with a United Nations peacekeeping force in Croatia) and his mother carried on in his memory. The Rama trip was enjoyed by everyone who went and Marie Prueter won the 50/50, Lois Gorman won the birthday prize and the lucky seat prizes went to Chris Robertson, Carol Clark, Al MacFadden and Marie Prueter. The next Rama trip will be today March 28. If you would like to go in the future, please sign the sheet requesting our own bus and then we will have lots of space for everyone and no one will be disappointed. After that cold spell, we are all hoping for spring and to get you in the mood we will have a fashion show here on Tuesday, April 10 at 2 p.m. There will be prizes and refreshments as well as the latest spring fashions. Tickets are $4 and available now. The centre will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday.
